On December 21, 2000, you may have received multiple copies of email messages. We have observed that this happens when users download their email more frequently than is necessary. The Eclipse mail server is still running the previous download, while the user's mail client requests its next timed download. This not only places another copy of the same email in the inbox, but it also unnecessarily ties up our mail server, sometimes causing brief outages. For unknown reasons, on this day we noticed an increased amount of this type of activity. For example, one user simultaneously ran 100 processes!
In order to prevent the inconvenience to you and to your fellow Eclipse members, we strongly urge you to check the Mail Server properties in your email client. Make sure your email client is NOT set to automatically download any new messages and does NOT check for mail more frequently than every 10 to 15 minutes.INSTRUCTIONS:
Netscape Communicator
