HEAT STROKE

(Hyperpyrexia)

What is it ?

A condition in dogs characterized by high body temperature, (105-110 degrees F), often causing permanent brain damage or death.

What causes it ?

Most often it is caused by owners who leave their dogs unattended in a parked car in warm or hot weather. High humidity contributes to the likelihood of heat stroke occurring.

What are the symptoms ?

  1. Rapid labored breathing.
  2. Temperature above 105 degrees F.

How to prevent it ?

  1. Do not leave your dog in a closed car or unventilated enclosure even on somewhat cool days.
  2. Always have fresh water available.
  3. Make sure your dog has adequate shade.
  4. Avoid heavy exercise in hot weather.
  5. Keep your dog in good physical condition. Do not let the dog become overweight, as fat hinders heat loss.

What to do if heat stroke occurs ?

The most important thing is rapid cooling of the dog which may be accomplished by one or all of the following :

  1. Immersion in a tub of cold water.
  2. Applying ice packs to head and neck.
  3. Spraying the dog with cold water from a hose.

Be sure to take your dog to veterinarian as soon as possible, as symptoms may reappear.
