this will hopefully (eventually) become a haphazard collection of some of my ill-conceived programming projects from over the years...

all will run on various windows platforms, everything is free to dl, use, and/or hack, and source code is provided for the adventurous.

this is a little utility for quake 3: arena that helps you to manage a large amount of addon (3rd-party) maps through a simple interface. ascoliast allows you to quickly launch individual or groups of maps with a few clicks, as well as allowing you to generate custom maplist (.CFG) files which allow you to browse and quickly launch selected maps from within the game (even while you're still shooting with your other hand ;).

note that the following screenshot features the "origin" windows xp visual style by space monkey, which i highly recommend ;).
there are still a few things i'd like to implement in this app, like the ability to import existing maplists for one; but it's more than serviceable as-is... just make sure you explore the options tab and the help/about tab to get your money's worth outta this thing.

btw, if you don't feel you have enough maps to justify using something like this, spend a while looking through ..::LvL, probably the best (and largest) quake 3 map review site out there - as long as you don't mind jumping through a few hoops to download maps off fileplanet (at least the proprietor of LvL is kind enough to provide his GameSpy login information for those who don't want to take the time to sign up for yet another website's "free" membership - check the top of the main LvL page).

you'll need a recent version of borland c++ builder to compile the source without any serious modification. you'll also need to download and install Chris Vleghert's ZipBuilder VCL component for Borland C++ Builder, as well as Scott Heiman's Bitmapped Graphics Library (BMGLib). if you need any help getting any of it to work, drop me a line - i'm hardly an expert, but i'd be glad to help.

this is my jack-of-all graphics testbed as i slowly learn windows graphics coding (currently only winapi / borland vcl calls, but eventually directdraw and maybe some direct3d/opengl if i stick it out).
it doesn't do much at the moment other than sit there and look sorta trippy - it renders a constricted random stream of connected pixels out to a viewport, building up on top of previously drawn pixels to make them appear brighter, while concurrently fading the entire viewport out to keep from completely filling the area with noise. it can also run in fullscreen (either stretching a smaller virtual render area for much better render speed, or rendering to the full desktop resolution), as i'm hoping to make using the thing as a screensaver an option once i've made it a little more interesting to look at ;).

my apologies to anyone who should try digging through the source code... there's not all that much there, and it's relatively basic stuff, but it's severely lacking in commentary or documentation of any kind. maybe once i've fleshed it out a bit more (a few builds down the road), i'll go into more detail - but in the meantime, if you're interested in anything that's going on underneath the hood, drop me a line at viscera@softhome.net and i'll try and clarify to whatever degree i'm able (remember, i'm still learning too ;).
